Asma bint Abu Bakr (ra) and her Grandfather

Asma bint Abu Bakr (ra) said; “When the Prophet ﷺ  headed to Madinah from Makkah, he took Abu Bakr(ra) and he gathered all his wealth, which was five or six thousand (dirhams). My grandfather Abu Qufah came to visit me, and at this time he had gone blind.

He said, ‘This man (Abu Bakr) put you in adversity. He deprived you of himself and property.’

I said, ‘No, on the contrary.’

I covered some stones, took my grandfather’s hands, placed them on the stones and said, ‘He left this for us.’

He said, ‘If he left this for you, there is no blame upon him.’” [Ibn Ishaq]

And so with this clever way Asma (ra) appeased her grandfather (not wishing to take anything from him or worry him) and stalled any possible hinderance he might cause to her father and the Prophet’s  ﷺ Hijra (migration).

Asma’s grandfather was not yet a Muslim, so he couldn’t grasp the gravity of the situation as Asma(ra) did. When the order came from Allah to leave, Abu Bakr(ra) did indeed take all his wealth to support the cause of Islam, knowing that the blessed Prophet ﷺ was in grave danger and therefore in need of every bit of it to settle in Madinah and evade the cruel clutches of the Quraysh.

Whilst our own lives and daily trials may be different, but making sacrifices (great or small) or enduring difficulties is a certainty in life no less. So we can learn much from Asma’s (ra) exemplary mindset. This inspiring story is about an extraordinary level of trust achieved where a believer places their absolute faith, and all hope in Allah (swt) alone.

While we are expected to strive to do our utmost to seek our provision, sometimes things can happen out of our control. Abu Bakr (ra) had an important duty to fulfill so Asma didn’t blame him. Instead Asma (ra) dutifully covered for her father and kept faith that Allah is the source of all provisions, confident in the knowledge He would suffice for her.

Allah(swt) says;

“Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear…” [TMQ 2:286].

“And whoever fears Allah – He will make a way out for him. And will provide for him from where he does not expect.” [TMQ 65: 2-3]🌙
