'They Are My Two Sweet Basils'

Narrated Buraidah:

"The Messenger of Allah  ﷺ  was delivering a Khutbah to us when Hasan (ra) and Husain (ra) came, wearing red shirts, walking and falling down. So the Messenger of Allah  ﷺ  descended from the Minbar and carried them, and placed them in front of him. Then he said: “Allah spoke the Truth: Indeed, your wealth and your children are a trial [64:15]. I looked at these two children walking and falling down, and I could not bear patiently anymore until I interrupted my talk and picked them up."[Majah]

The grandsons of the Prophet  ﷺ  were very young at an age when they stumbled about walking, and as such, some might well be able to appreciate how endearing a young child can appear in the eyes of their parents and relatives. This was clearly the case with the Prophet  ﷺ;

For he loved his grandsons dearly and was kind and affectionate in his dealings with them. So much so, Ibn Nua’im reported he was in the company of Ibn Umar (ra) when he said; ‘... I heard the Prophet  ﷺ say; “They are my two sweet basils in the world,” [ Bukhari]. 🌱

For those who are parents it’s fair to say children are a big part of life that will claim much of their time, energy and attention. They’ll test us in so many ways in raising them and may well push every imaginable emotional button we have. So perhaps it’s inevitable they’ll either drive us up the wall or simply drive us to distraction through our love and care for them.

Despite the ups and downs of the relationship we can be sure of something. Children might well be a trial but it’s good to remember that they’re also a potential to be a great source of rewards for any kind, loving, patient, persevering, striving, dutiful, conscientious parent who endeavours to raise them well; There’s the reward for raising a good child inshAllah, and reward for all the aforementioned qualities that they (their cherished children) brought out in their parents too!

Aisha (ra) reported: The Messenger of Allah  ﷺ said, “The best of you are the best to their families, and I am the best to my family.“ [Tirmidhi] 🌙
