Abdullah Ibn Umar (ra) Followed His Father

When Umar Ibn Al Khattab(ra) embraced Islam after having spent years fiercely opposing it, he wanted to proclaim it openly. His son Abdullah Ibn Umar said;

Umar(ra) asked :

“Which of the people of Makkah is the best at spreading news?” They said: “Jamil bin Ma’mar Al-Jamhi .”

“So Umar went out and I followed him and I was a young boy who understood everything that was said, then he came to him and said: ‘Oh, Jamil! Do you know that I have embraced Islam?‘ By Allah, he did not reply to these words, but stood up and raced off and Umar followed behind him and I went with him, until he stood at the door of the mosque and cried out: ‘Oh people of Quraish Umar has apostatised!’ He (Umar (ra) ) said: ‘You have lied, but I have embraced Islam.’” [Child Companions around the Prophet ﷺ]

Umar’s son Abdullah (ra) was a good soul, young and impressionable - still upon the natural state in which Allah created him and so was in a way ready to receive the new religion. Abdullah used to hear about Muhammad (saw), his truthfulness and trustworthiness and so was filled with wonder by his personality, as he had heard so many people say good things about him. When his father embraced Islam and announced his conversion, his young son felt that a heavy stone which had been blocking the way to his conversion to Islam had been removed, and he embraced Islam while still at a young age and he became a pious Muslim.

Sometimes children can realise what is better before their parents or adults can. They look through carefree, innocent and unbiased eyes at the world whilst sometimes parents’ views are clouded by their own worries, worldly concerns and weaknesses. But regardless, young kids naturally look to be guided by parents, using them as a measure for their own actions.

As parents we have a strong ability to either inspire our children when we aspire to make ourselves better or hold them back unwittingly by our own lack of understanding or willingness to better ourselves.

So to see the best come out in our kids we have to start with ourselves.🌙
