Umm Salamah bint Abi Umayyah (ra)

While sadly problems exist today in our communities, especially around women’s issues tainted by un-Islamic cultures, it’s apt to remind ourselves of just how high the regard for women is in Islam, through another of the Prophet’sﷺ wives.🌹

Umm Salamah’s(ra) opinions were welcomed; expressed as needed, with the best of manners, wisdom and self-confidence. Sometimes she advised the Prophetﷺ, and even once Umar(ra) during his intrusion into a family discord when she said;

“I am surprised at you, O son of Khattab! ... are you going to even interfere between the Prophet and his wives?” Umar(ra) later said: “Her words affected me in such a way that my anger melted away.”[Bukhari]

The Ansar said Umm Salamah(ra) was the first woman to migrate to them, but it hadn’t been easy. She endured much persecution; separated from her husband, her child taken away from her, her grief lasted a year-long until the intervention of a sympathetic tribe’s member saw her reunited with her family. Before her marriage to the Prophetﷺ, she had made Hijra to Abyssinia with her then husband Abu Salamah(ra) and later Hijra to Medina alone with her child until a Companion found her, assisting her the rest of the way.

Once Umm Salamah(ra) said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Allah does not mention women in connection with the Hijra.’

So, Allah(swt) said, “So their Lord accepted of them (their supplication and answered them), ‘Never will I allow to be lost the work of any of you, be he male or female.’”[3:195]🌙

Allah(swt) is Just and while His Divine words were always addressing both men and women, He(swt) answered Umm Salamah(ra) with the reminder that men and women are spiritually equal; partners and not competitors in life, like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle they’re designed to match, compliment and complete each other. Allah, SWT gave affirmation to both genders in their own right, and the respect due to each for their different natures and the pivotal roles each plays for the betterment of society. No work or value of either gender could ever be lost in His eyes.🌙
