Power of Dua

Muhammad Ibn Ishaaq As-Simsaar reported his Shaikh said Imam Al Bukhari lost his eyesight when he was a young child. One day his mother saw prophet Ibrahim (as) in a dream, and he said to her; โ€˜Allah has returned to your son his eyesight because of your many supplications.โ€™ When Imam Al Bukhari woke up [after that very night of the dream] he found that Allah had indeed returned to him his eyesight. [Muqaddimatul-Fath]๐ŸŒ™

It is said his vision came back stronger than before. Later he would write chapters of his book At-Taareekh Al Kabeer using only the moonlight to see what he was writing down. [Seeratul-Bukhari]

Imam Al Bukhariโ€™s mother was a pious, prolific worshipper. This story is a lovely reminder in so many ways;

-The importance of persistence and sincerity in making dua. The answer to Imam Al Bukhari โ€˜s motherโ€™s duas didnโ€™t happen overnight but after much patience, perseverance and hope during such difficult times. Still she continued to pray and live in hope, to be rewarded with a happy ending thereafter.

-We can never underestimate the power of dua, especially that of a parent for their child.

Abu Huraira (ra) said; The Prophet ๏ทบ said, "Three supplications are answered without doubt. The supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveller, and the supplication of the parent over his child." [At-Tirmidhi]

Whether or not a particular prayer is answered in the way we ask, Allah (swt) is aware of all of our needs, hears our prayers and does what is best for us. He (swt) is All-Knowing and sees the bigger picture of our lives as we cannot; sometimes what we ask for may not be good for us, although we may not realise it at the time. Like the analogy of a parent who stops a child getting too many sweets, which is more harmful in the end. Or not allowing a child to climb a tall tree that the child doesnโ€™t realise theyโ€™re not capable of; it may lead to great harm.

Bet even if we donโ€™t receive exactly what we ask for, no dua is ever lost;

โ€œNo one makes a dua without one of three things happening. Either itโ€™s answered, or it is stored up for him, or wrong actions are atoned for by it.โ€ [Muwatta ]๐ŸŒ™
